Frequently asked questions

+What is three-phase power in simple terms?

Electricity delivered on three wires whose voltages peak at evenly spaced times, so power flow never drops to zero. See What Is Three-Phase Electricity?

+What voltages are common for three-phase in the US?

208Y/120 V and 480Y/277 V are most common in commercial and industrial buildings. Older buildings may have 240 V delta, sometimes high-leg delta.

+Why is it 208 V and not 240 V?

In a 120 V wye system, line-to-line voltage is 120 × √3 ≈ 208 V. A 240 V-rated device on 208 V gets about 13% less voltage, so check nameplates.

+Can I get three-phase power at home?

Sometimes, if the utility has three-phase lines nearby. It usually involves extra cost. Most US homes are served with split-phase 120/240 V.

+How do I know if my building has three-phase power?

Look for three-pole main breakers, panel labels such as 208Y/120 or 480Y/277, or three hot conductors plus a neutral entering the panel. A licensed electrician should confirm.

+How do I calculate three-phase amps?

I = kW × 1,000 ÷ (√3 × V × PF). Try the Power Calculator.

+Can a three-phase motor run on single-phase power?

Not directly. Options include a VFD rated for single-phase input (usually derated), or a rotary or static phase converter. See Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase.

+What happens if a three-phase motor loses one phase?

It may keep running but draws excessive current and overheats. A stopped motor won't restart. Phase-loss protection prevents damage. See Common Problems.

+How do I reverse a three-phase motor?

Swap any two of the three supply leads (with power off and locked out). This reverses the field rotation.

+Do I need a neutral in a three-phase system?

Only if you have line-to-neutral loads such as 120 V or 277 V circuits. Purely three-phase loads like motors don't use it. See Wye vs. Delta.

+Is three-phase more efficient than single-phase?

For delivering large amounts of power, yes. It uses less conductor for the same power, and three-phase motors are generally more efficient. See Benefits.

+How much does it cost to install three-phase service?

It varies widely with distance to utility lines, service size and site conditions, from modest to very significant. Get a utility assessment and contractor quotes. We can help you scope it.

+Does Essential Systems sell equipment?

No. We help you define requirements and connect with suppliers and contractors. See Equipment Sourcing.

+Is this site connected to 3Phase Services and Supplies, LLC?

No. This website is owned and published by Essential Systems and is not affiliated with any previous owner of the domain.
